When I first started this position, I did not have the slightest clue what eClinicalWorks (ECW) or Electronic Health Records (EHR) were. I mean, clearly, the name "Electronic Health Records" gives me a pretty good idea, but needless to say I was lost when I began reading the notes that our technicians were putting into their tickets. 

Here are some things to help broaden your horizons a little:

EHR (Electronic Health Records)- Clearly, the name just about sums it up... but for those of you who do not trust your gut, I'll give you the run down! Electronic health records are literally electronic (paperless) versions of a patients' medical records. Told you... the name sums it up! Shouldh've went with your gut, huh? That's right, all your information, stored in one nifty little(or big..?) electronic file. According to a website I found, EHS is supposed to be the next step in strengthening the relationships between patients and their health care providers. Wanna know how? ECW (eClinicalWorks)- This is basically a system created so that healthcare practices can go completely paperless.... not to mention a good way to keep our handy-dandy technicians busy! Network Server- a computer that is designed to process requests and deliver data to other other computers via a local network or internet. There are quite a few servers out there: some of the more common ones include: web servers, proxy servers, FTP servers, and online game servers (You know, like that dumb Modern Warfare game that your fiance plays 24/7 that leaves him completely oblivious to everything going on in the world around him! No? Hmm, maybe that's just my fiance, then).

Firewall- A firewall protects the resources of a private network from users on other networks. Here is an example: Prestige Computer Solutions (who are they?!) has an intranet that allows their workers (like me) to access information, etc.  We have a firewall to prevent those creepers who may be hanging outside in the parking lot from accessing our private data resources, and also to control what resources we(within the company) have access to. 

Intranet- an intranet is a private network that is contained within an enterprise. We have our own intranet (our ticketing system) that allows all of our employees to access the same information within the company. I don't think I can simplify it anymore than this..... 

Hopefully this was semi-helpful. If I think of more useful terms, I will be sure to post them! I know that there are a million of them that I still don't know a lick about... but hey, I'm making progress. 

Social networking is one of the most common things today. Almost every person has a social networking site, whether it be a Facebook, Myspace, Linkedin, Pinterest or Twitter, its very common for people to have these. Also, social networking is becoming a trend of businesses as well. Most companies are using these social networking sites in order to bring in and expand their clientele as well as to promote their services. Social networking can be a wonderful thing, but on the other hand it most certainly has its downfalls. Cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and cyber-identity theft are among some of the many downfalls that come with our technology-focused world. There are a number of things that you can do in order to protect yourself from being a target of these things. Be sure to use tough passwords with a combination of numbers and letters and symbols or spaces. By doing this, it makes it harder for people to be able to "guess" your passwords and hack into your personal stuff online. 

Remember, the internet is one large portal of information. It can be a wonderful thing when you are trying to research and compare services that different businesses may offer, but keep in mind that it can be damaging as well. The internet does not have an eraser, so all the information you put on the internet is going to be there forever, its just a matter of knowing how to find it. Even large companies are taking their applicants and googling them or trying to find their social networking site in order to get a better idea of the persons demeanors. Social networking sites today actually seem to have the power to make or break you. Keep that in mind before you go posting absurd photos of yourself from last weekends party that you don't remember. Your future [dream]employer may be looking at that same photo thinking, "do I really want to hire this person?"

In today's society we seem to rely on everything technology based. Hospitals, doctors offices, educational institutions, banking, shopping... it's all online now. It is a wonderful convenience to those of us who do not have enough time in a day to run out and do errands, but on the flip side, it is also a scary thing. Any information that you put out on the web has the potential to be viewed by third parties. There is all sorts of information that can be found online. Medical Records are mostly online and technology based now, your property information is readily available online through the county tax assessors website. Every detail of every person's life is for the most part online somewhere. It is completely up to us to make sure that it is protected. Fox news put out a list of twelve simple steps that can help protect your identity online. Foxnews.com's 12 simple steps to help protect your identity online:

1. Clam Up. If a site requires registration, fill in only the required fields. Look closely for at any checkboxes relating to sharing your information — depending on how they're worded, you'll need to check or uncheck the box to deny sharing permission.

2. Lie. If the registration isn't part of an important ongoing business relationship, consider filling the required fields with, shall we say, truth-challenged data. Or get ready-made registration information from www.bugmenot.com.

3. Look for the Lock. The lock symbol in your browser's Status Bar and "https" in the Address Bar show that you've got a secure connection. Look for it any time you're about to engage in a financial transaction. The lock isn't a guarantee of security, but its absence is a guarantee of NO security.

4. Sniff Out Phish. If you get an e-mail about a problem with your bank or other financial institution, never click any links. Go directly to the bank's Web site and research the problem there. If there is no problem, inform the bank about this fraud attempt.

5. Sniff Out Phish, II. Both Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 include built-in detection of fraudulent Web sites using a combination of blacklisting and actual Web-page analysis. Be sure this feature is turned on, and take it seriously.

6. Search Safely. For additional help avoiding dangerous Web sites, consider installing one (or more) of the helpful site-safety add-ons described in our Search Securely roundup. If you see a red flag, stay away!

7. Control Yourself. Chances are good your security suite includes a private data protection option. When the data you've chosen to protect is about to go out in a Web form, e-mail, or IM, it either prevents transmission or replaces the private data. This feature's not for everyone, but if you feel you need help controlling what you send out, give it a try.

8. Use One-Shot Credit Cards. Check with your credit card company online — they may offer an option to create one-shot credit card numbers. When you exercise this option to make a purchase online, the number received by the merchant will be valid for just that transaction.

9. Educate Your Kids. You can be fanatically careful, but it won't do any good if your kids e-mail or IM personal information to strangers. If they're old enough, get them on your team to protect your family's identity. If not, use parental controls or private data protection to limit their ability to blab family secrets.

10. Secure Your System. Forget the Internet — worry about a colleague or neighbor-kid who sits down at your system and copies off your personal files. Use strong passwords, and be sure to lock the desktop when you step away from the computer.

11. Think Outside the Box. Don't believe everything that comes in an envelope. And shred any sensitive information before discarding or recycling it. Identity theft isn't limited to the online world!

12. Inform Yourself. There are plenty of resources available to help you understand just how you may be vulnerable. Start with PC Magazine's own "Identity Theft: What, Me Worry?" and "Defending Your Identity." Check free resources like the Federal Trade Commission's ID Theft site. And be alert for fraud!

So.... which is better? The iPhone, or the Droid? I've heard so many good and bad things about both, that I just don't know.

My personal opinion is that, although I love the Apple products, I do not like the fact that Apple controls everything through their own software. By this I mean, in order to download songs, games, apps, etc. you have to use iTunes. Doesn't sound that bad, right? To me, that's wrong. I mean, at least with my Droid, I have the ability to download all sorts of different songs and ringtones for free from all different places. But can you do that with the iPhone? I may be wrong, and I am more than willing to admit it if I am, but don't you have to pay almost a dollar for each song that you download on the iPhone? 

With that being said, I think I am going to stick with my droid phone for the time being. On the other hand, I do still think that I would like to upgrade to the iPhone, but maybe I will wait. I like free better than I do paying.. even if it means that I have to deal with the occasional virus or bug.

So, after a slow[er] Monday, I was expecting what Ann likes to refer to as a "terrible Tuesday"... but so far it hasn't been too bad.

I mean, the technicians are staying busy as usual... running around all over the place to save Warner Robins from technological failure, but other than that, the office seems to be having a somewhat quiet week so far. By quiet week I mean, that today we only have 11 open tickets.

Anyways, aside from a slow[er] day, does anyone else feel like there isn't enough time in a day? Technology seems to be advancing more and more everyday... but the one thing that would help me our tremendously doesn't seem to be coming out anytime soon (or ever). I mean, come on Apple, where is my iClone when I need it. If I could clone 2 extra me's, I would be able to work all day long, study all day, and keep my house clean simultaneously!!!! How great would that be?! Actually, maybe I want to clone 3 of me, so I can do all of that and work on sewing/crafts all day long :)

Alright "terrible Tuesday", your making my mind wander a bit off subject. Anywhoodles, back to work I go!

So, let me start off by being a bit cliche and saying, TGIF!

It's Friday, and although the office is a bit quiet today, the technicians sure aren't catching a break. I must give props to our dedicated techs that are working around the clock in order to ensure that our customers are happy, and that their technology isn't failing them. I would like to give special recognition to Jeremy for working non-stop since before the Christmas holiday.

Just this past weekend (January 6, 2012-January 8, 2012), Jeremy alone, spent 38.5 hours onsite doing a Centricity upgrade for one of our major clients. On Friday (1/8/2012) He worked from 7:30 am until 4 am Saturday morning with only a 30 minute lunch break in between. Just thinking about it makes me tired. He has been working like a machine, and has been taking time away from his wife and five kids in order to ensure that our customers are fully satisfied. Honestly, we couldn't thank him enough for all the hard work and effort he has been putting forth in order to help us get all of tasks done in a timely manner.

Needless to say, we are keeping our techs busy, but busy is a good thing........
